    Common Tree Care Myths

Don't be fooled by common misconceptions. Here's the truth from our experts.

    Myth:

'Topping' a tree is a good way to control its height.

    The Truth:

Topping is actually extremely damaging. It stresses the tree, creates weak new growth, and can lead to disease or death. Proper crown reduction is the only safe way to manage height.

    Myth:

Trees need to be staked tightly to grow straight.

    The Truth:

Trees actually need some movement to develop a strong trunk. Staking should be loose and only used if necessary for a year or less.

    Myth:

Filling a tree cavity with concrete helps it heal.

    The Truth:

This is an old practice that actually traps moisture and promotes decay. Cavities should be left open and cleaned of debris only.

    Myth:

Adding fertilizer to the planting hole helps the tree start.

    The Truth:

Fertilizer can actually burn sensitive new roots. It's better to use native soil and wait until the tree is established before fertilizing.
