Preparing Your Trees for the Arizona Summer

Arizona summers are relentless. Temperatures regularly exceed 110°F in the Scottsdale and Paradise Valley area, and without proper preparation, your trees can suffer serious heat stress, sunscald, and even die. The good news? A little proactive care goes a long way.

    1. Deep Water Before the Heat Arrives

Most homeowners underestimate how much water mature trees need in the desert. Before summer kicks in — ideally in late April and early May — give your trees a deep, slow watering session. Place a hose at the drip line and let it run slowly for 30–60 minutes. This saturates the root zone and gives trees a reservoir to draw from once temperatures spike.

    2. Mulch the Root Zone

Apply 3–4 inches of organic mulch in a wide circle around the base of the tree, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk. Mulch insulates roots from the brutal ground heat, retains moisture, and improves soil health over time. This single step can dramatically reduce summer stress.

    3. Trim Dead and Crossing Branches Now — Not Later

Spring is the best time to prune. Once temperatures hit triple digits, trees are already under stress and pruning cuts become harder to heal. Remove dead, diseased, and crossing branches before summer to reduce the tree's overall water demand and improve airflow through the canopy.

    4. Watch for Signs of Heat Stress

Common signs include wilting leaves (especially in the afternoon), leaf scorch on the outer edges, and early leaf drop. If you see these signs, increase watering frequency and consider calling a certified arborist for a professional assessment.

    5. Avoid Over-Pruning in Summer

Many homeowners think thinning the canopy will help trees stay cool. In reality, leaves provide shade to branches and the trunk. Excessive summer pruning exposes bark to direct sun, causing sunscald and inviting pests. Only remove what's necessary.
