Palo Verde Tree Care Guide: Keeping the State Tree Healthy

The Palo Verde is Arizona's state tree, instantly recognizable by its green bark and spectacular display of bright yellow flowers in the spring. While they are perfectly adapted to the desert environment, they still require proper care in a residential landscape to maintain their structure and health.

Understanding the Green Bark

"Palo Verde" translates to "green stick" in Spanish. The tree's bark is green because it contains chlorophyll, allowing the tree to photosynthesize even when it drops its leaves during extreme droughts. This is a brilliant survival mechanism, but it means you must be careful not to damage the bark with weed whackers or improper pruning.

Watering Your Palo Verde

Overwatering is the number one killer of Palo Verde trees in residential yards. They are highly drought-tolerant once established. Water them deeply but infrequently. During the summer, a deep soak once every two to three weeks is usually sufficient. In the winter, you may only need to water them once a month.

Pruning for Structure

Palo Verdes are rapid growers and can develop heavy, sprawling canopies. Without proper structural pruning, branches can become too heavy and snap during monsoon winds. Have an arborist thin the canopy and remove crossing branches to improve airflow and reduce wind resistance.

Pest Management: The Palo Verde Borer Beetle

The Palo Verde root borer is a large beetle whose larvae feed on the roots of the tree. While healthy trees can usually withstand a mild infestation, stressed trees can decline rapidly. If you notice branch dieback or see large exit holes near the base of the tree, contact an arborist immediately.
