What to Do After a Monsoon Storm Damages Your Trees
Arizona's monsoon season (June through September) brings intense storms that can snap branches, uproot trees, and leave dangerous debris scattered across your property. Knowing exactly what to do — and what NOT to do — in the immediate aftermath can protect your family and prevent further damage.
Step 1: Stay Safe First
Before going outside after a storm, look for downed power lines near fallen trees. Never touch or approach a tree that's in contact with electrical lines. Call your utility company first and wait for them to clear the area.
Step 2: Assess the Damage Without Touching
Walk around your property and document damage with photos from a safe distance. Note which trees are uprooted vs. which have broken branches. Uprooted trees are generally not salvageable; split or broken trees often can be treated and saved if addressed quickly.
Step 3: Don't Attempt DIY on Large Trees
Large fallen trees and hanging "widow maker" branches are extremely dangerous for untrained homeowners. A branch that looks lodged can release suddenly and cause serious injury. Leave major cleanup to certified arborists with the right equipment and training.
Step 4: Call a Certified Arborist Immediately
Speed matters after storm damage. Exposed wounds on trees are entry points for disease and pests. Getting a professional on-site quickly to clean up breaks, apply wound treatments, and assess stability can save trees that might otherwise need to be removed.
Step 5: Document for Insurance
Take detailed photos before any cleanup begins. Most homeowner's insurance policies cover storm damage removal when the tree has fallen on a structure. Your arborist can also provide documentation for your claim.
